Posting Number: 20212797S Position Title: Director of Research and Innovation, College of Engineering Position Type: Staff Location: Villanova, PA Recruitment Type: Internal/External Applicants Work Schedule: full-time/12-months Avg Hours Week Department: 201-Dean-Engineering Position Summary: The Director for Research and Innovation will report to the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the College of Engineering and will be responsible for managing research and innovation of the College’s growing research and innovation enterprise, providing support of the research and innovation development and growth in the College, and promoting the initiatives with the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation.

This team member will work with faculty to develop interdisciplinary research programs, run seed research programs, provide an environment to nucleate new research endeavors and support and grow existing research programs, including working with external funding agencies, foundations, and corporations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in developing interdisciplinary collaborations among departments within the College, across colleges of the University, and across universities. 
  • Support and advise the Associate Dean on spending, financial objectives, and policies for the research and innovation mission in the College. 
  • Administer and track intellectual property development (IP) in the College of Engineering.

    Work with external technology transfer consultancy as liaison in IP communications and administration.

  • Manage seed research initiatives within the College, follow-up support to develop a network and success in research extramural funding.

    Work with Center Directors to help support opportunities to advance and promote research activities. 

  • Support faculty development in their pursuit of research and scholarly activities including providing mentorship and support in scoping out projects (congruency of work to be performed vs.

    proposed budget) including monitoring of proposal success rates and intervening to support faculty where needed. 

  • Provide support and local enforcement of compliance with sponsor and institutional policies including proposal submission timeline, cost share monitoring, export control and other regulatory considerations.
  • Coordinate faculty workshops on grant writing, research administration, laboratory safety, IACUC , IRB , and other research-related needs with OG&C.

    Partner on grant review panels and grant writing critiques for faculty in grant submissions. 

  • Work with external relations and Associate Dean for Research and Innovation on developing new research opportunities or in support of current research opportunities. 
  • Coordinate with all departments on research priorities and needs.

    Support undergraduate research and work in development and support of vertically integrated projects. 

  • Provide reports to dean and associate dean on research metrics including sponsored award activities, number of publications, citations, H-indices, number of doctoral students, placement of doctoral students, post-docs, and other analytics as needed. 
  • Provide input into nominations for research awards for faculty and students.

    Track research awards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with 7-10 years of experience in academic administration related to research management. 
  • Individual must be a team player with strong writing, interpersonal, organizational, project management and planning skills. 
  • Must be a flexible, upbeat, energetic self-starter who enjoys collaboration with a wide variety of constituencies. 
  • They must have strong communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to maintain excellent relationships. 
  • The individual must be able to work independently as well as with others in a productive manner. 
  • Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment. 
  • The individual must have a deep commitment to the well-being of the University, a commitment to the University’s mission and heritage, and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science or Master of Business Administration degree.
  • Knowledge of a university research infrastructure.
  • Demonstration of grant/external award audit preparation.
  • Familiarity with grants reporting and research administration processes.
