General Description

The Educational Support Services Division at the Community College of Philadelphia invites applications for a full-time (12-month), tenure-track English Second Language (ESL) Specialist to join a team of devoted faculty.

A department within the Educational Support Services Division, the Learning Lab fosters student success by providing academic and tutoring support to students enrolled in college courses. Specialists within the Learning Lab are responsible for providing workshops, small group, and individual instruction; assisting in developing, implementing, and providing leadership to a staff of peer tutors and part-time specialists; maintaining widespread knowledge of academic programs and student services; and collaborating with instructional faculty in academic departments to promote appropriate Learning Lab support, to enhance student performance and retention.

The Learning Lab’s ESL Specialist is responsible for the ongoing development and coordination of the academic support services offered to students in ESL courses including speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar to non-native speakers, working closely and collaboratively with the ESL faculty in the English Department, and must be able to provide academic support to students in all ESL courses. This tenure track position requires considerable contact with a diverse population of students through in-person and online support including individual and small group sessions.

Specific Responsibilities

• Provide instructional, academic, and tutoring support to individuals and small groups of students in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.

• Collaborate with College faculty and staff in the Learning Lab and Student Academic Computing Center Department, as well as with the ESL faculty in the English Department, on best practices for supporting students in ESL courses.

• Develop and facilitate writing, grammar, conversation, and other appropriate workshops, as well as instructional materials, for ESL students.

• Outreach to students and faculty College-wide related to support services in the Learning Lab.

• Ascertain that appropriate materials and learning aids, including computer software, are available through the Learning Lab for faculty, tutors, and students.

• Utilize technology for instructional and professional purposes.

• Assist the Department Head and other Learning Lab Specialists in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating PT faculty for ESL courses.

• Provide online tutoring support through the Learning Lab’s Online Tutoring Program.

• Assist the Department Head in collecting, analyzing, and reporting data regarding the effectiveness of the Learning Lab support services for students in ESL courses.

• Attend College-wide and departmental meetings as appropriate.

• Perform College-wide and departmental service activities as appropriate.

• Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, speaking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.

• Serves on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, department matters, and academic issues.

• Participates in campus and community events.

• Work appropriate hours in accordance with existing scheduling procedure, which may include evening, weekend, and possible off-campus assignments at Regional Centers.

• All other duties assigned by the Chair/Department Head of the Learning Lab and Student Academic Computing Center Department.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in English as a Second Language (ESL), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), or other closely related degree programs.

• Must have at least three years teaching experience at the post-secondary or secondary level and experience with adult learners.

• Knowledge and experience utilizing educational technology.

• Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

• Experience working and adapting to student and departmental needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities is preferred.

• Community college experience preferred.

• Organizational and supervisory experience preferred.
