This individual would be responsible to set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and measuring instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools, applying knowledge of shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. They would also enroll and complete the machinist apprenticeship program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Undertake a variety of jobs, in some cases with limited instruction or information from the customer.
• Position and fasten work pieces.
• Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machine.
• Work from sketches, verbal, and print information in order to produce projects according to specifications.
• Select the appropriate tools and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
• Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as CNC Mills/Lathes, Manual Mills/Lathes, Drill Press, Jig Bore, Sanders, Grinders, and other support equipment. .
• Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
• Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers, depth micrometers, inside diameter gauges, and outside diameter gauges.
• Read and understand gauging sheets.
• Read and interpret blueprints to ensure parts are being made according to specifications.
• Listen to machine and tooling to ensure machine and tooling are running properly.
• Operate hoist in order to load parts onto machining center, lathe, or mill.
• Takes job down efficiently (Tooling, cleaning fixtures, putting gauges back, etc).
• Actively participate in the 5S program, which is to Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain in order to maintain a highly productive work environment.
• Assist with keeping the department and machinery clean

Critical Competencies

• Learn and work with Conversational Programming.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
• Ability to hold tight machining tolerances
• Knowledge and experience using micrometers, depth micrometers, inside diameter gauge, and outside diameter gauge.
• Understand various tooling technology.
• Basic Math Skills
• Geometric Tolerance Skills
• Troubleshooting – Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
• Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Operation Monitoring – Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
• Possess a general knowledge of tooling speeds and feed rates.

Education and Experience Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Job Shop and CNC experience a plus.
• Will be required to obtain Journeyman card for continuous employment.

Physical Demand and Work Environment:

Work environment includes regular exposure to noise levels at or above 85 decibels, dust particles, light radiation, paint or oil products, and weather changes. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required to be worn during shift.

Physical requirements include lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, arm-hand steadiness, finger dexterity, manual dexterity, control precision, near vision, and hearing sensitivity.
