Research Scientist

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a qualified candidate for a Research Scientist staff position in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine and the Pediatric Asthma Center.

The Research Scientist will act as Laboratory Director and will have scientific and administrative duties.

The main laboratory roles include the design and implementation of experiments and studies with a focus on genetic, epigenetic, and transcriptomic analysis, as well as functional validation of candidate pathways using primary cell cultures at air-liquid interface and other similar approaches.

Skills required include blood and tissue harvesting or cell sorting, RNA and DNA extraction, sample preparation for RNA sequencing and DNA methylation, rt-PCR, cell cultures, Western blotting, ELISA, lincoplex, agarose gel electrophoresis, fluorometry, flow cytometry, and other molecular biology techniques.

Scientific roles will include supporting the preparation of NIH grant applications (budgets, budget justification, laboratory methods), working with principal investigators, clinical staff, core lab directors to plan and develop procedures, assess and define scope of work, and establish protocols and budgets for the initiation of new studies.

The Research Scientist will also communicate with key stakeholders including principal investigators, center director, and division chief, regarding needs and progress of ongoing studies, and coordinating laboratory aspects of new and ongoing studies with clinical research coordinators, core and clinical laboratories, and other stakeholders.

Main administrative tasks will include managing laboratory personnel (currently two technicians), with weekly meetings to discuss project progress as well as periodic personnel evaluations including hiring, training, and evaluating new personnel as needed.

They will also establish and manage job tasks, expectations, turnaround times, and priorities for laboratory staff and working to improve workflow and productivity.

The Research Scientist will supervise laboratory technicians and other trainees on daily tasks and troubleshooting as necessary to ensure project deadlines are met, manage laboratory supplies, expenditures, budget, and billing.

In addition, they will oversee equipment, laboratory purchases and maintenance, while ensuring compliance with regulations and laboratory procedures, as well as preparation and conduction of periodic laboratory inspection.

The Research Scientist will be an active collaborator with the Principal Investigators in the development and implementation of research projects and will facilitate and coordinate all aspects of such projects.

There may also be some teaching and training of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.

At least 3 years of post-graduate research experience in a related field of study is required.

Experience in RNA work and transcriptomics is strongly preferred.

This position is located at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville.

PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the start of employment.

Also, a current TB test will be required as a condition of employment.

Doctoral degree required in molecular biology or similar field, with at least 3 years of post-graduate research experience in a related field of study.

Experience in high-quality RNA and DNA extraction from blood and different tissues, transcriptomic work including RNA-sequencing, and other molecular biology approaches such as cell cultures, cell sorting, flow cytometry, etc., are all strongly preferred.

Preference will be given to candidates who have a proven track record of productivity, innovation, and leadership.

Proven ability to obtain external funding is considered a plus.
