Plain Community Psychiatrist – Outpatient Care of Amish & Mennonites

WellSpan Philhaven serves 25,000+ individuals annually through innovative behavioral health programs at 27 locations across south central PA.  Philhaven’s Plain Community Clinic, located in scenic Mt. Gretna, is seeking two fulltime staff physicians. 

Opportunity:

• Members of the Old Order Amish & Mennonite communities can struggle with anxiety, depression, mania, etc.
• The Amish may avoid seeking psychiatric help in secular settings, fearing their religious traditions will be viewed as part of the problem
• Serving these groups is a challenging and rewarding cross-cultural experience
• Extensive involvement of family/community members help patients follow treatment recommendations
• 30-minute med checks & 60-minute evaluations allow for the complex nature of this patient population
• Psychiatrists see approximately 12-14 patients per day
• The clinic has a unique partnership with the Green Pasture Residence, a hospitality facility run by members of the local Old Order Amish community
• Green Pasture Residence provides housing to individuals receiving outpatient treatment
• In addition to physicians, the multidisciplinary treatment team is comprised of CRNPs, Social Workers & Psychologists
• Regular meetings help the team coordinate treatment, support one another & achieve successful treatment outcomes
